A standardized patient (SP) is a person who is trained to act as a patient to help medical students and other healthcare professionals practice and assess their clinical skills. SPs are used in a variety of settings and training methods, including:Simulation activities: SPs can be used in computer-based virtual environments, high-fidelity mannequins, and task trainers.Clinical examinations: SPs can be used in observed structured clinical exams (OSCEs).Interactive teaching: SPs can be used in interactive teaching environments and group demonstrations.Videos: SPs can be used in videos.SPs are trained to portray a patient's personal history, physical symptoms, emotional characteristics, and everyday concerns. They are also coached to provide constructive feedback to students from the patient's perspective.SPs are essential to the education of physicians and other healthcare professionals.
